It is difficult to pinpoint when my fascination with graphical, mathematical programs first began. However, I do remember one of the first programs I used, dating back almost fifteen years. Perhaps some of you have read James Gleick’s book, Chaos, Making a New Science. At that time there was also a program produced with James Gleick and John Walker, formerly of Autodesk, Inc. It was a stunning display of fractals, toy universes, IFS (Iterated Functions Systems), Strange Attractors, Mandelbrot and Julia sets and, they were computer-based graphics. As part of my Ph.D. research at North Carolina State University’s College of Textiles, I fine-tuned my interests in the use of graphical representations of mathematics and geometry.
